How is change of holder handled in the event of sale of business?

Updated 16 Apr, 2020

This is handled in accordance with the standard change of holder procedure, whereby the current domain holder must sign a transfer form or authorise the change through an equivalent procedure.

The registrar is responsible for verifying that the person requesting the change of holder is authorised to act on behalf of the current domain holder. The new domain holder must provide accurate and up-to-date holder information and accept the registration terms and conditions.

If difficulties arise in obtaining the current domain holder's signature or otherwise verifying their identity, it may indicate that the domain name was not included in the sale of the business. In such cases, the domain name must not be transferred unless it can be established that the domain name was included in the sale and the change of holder is properly authorised.
