What does an extra verification check mean?

Updated 20 Sep, 2024

Upon new registration, the registrar must always verify the registrant and ensure that the registrant´s information is accurate. The information must also be kept up to date over time.

If the registry assess that there is a deficiency in the registrant´s information, the domain is flagged for an extra verification check during the registration process. Extra verification checks may also be carried out for a previously registered domain.

This check means that the registrar must take action by verifying the registrant again, ensuring that the registrant´s provided details are 100% correct, and correcting them if necessary.

During an ongoing verification check for a newly registered domain, the domain is inactive and is not included in the zone file (serverHold). The domain is also locked against renewal and registrar transfer.

For a verification check of a domain that was registered previously, a grace period is granted before the domain is deactivated. The length of the grace period may vary from 5 to 60 days (typically 60 days).

The check will be performed on domain registrations based on various established criteria, which may change over time.

By updating the domain with verified registrant information (new registrant ID), the verification process ends, the domain is activated, and included in the zone file. At the same time, the block on renewal and registrar transfer is removed.
